Thoughts about music

To me, working with music is about focus within different musical genres, parameters, styles, traditions, and aesthetic expressions, with both improvisation and composition as a starting-point.

There is no contradiction in working within certain genre-limitations, when necessary, and to challenge established “truths” if the main goal is to achieve something that I see as good or interesting music. On the contrary, I believe that it is critical that a genre-challenging singer, musician, composer and/or improviser knows, to some extent, about the possibilities and challenges the genres in question withhold. I also have experienced that different projects give inspiration to each other, as a singer, musician, composer, lyricist and improviser.

I consistently work with both improvisation and composition, in parallel as well as separated from each other. I thereby approach something that lies between these two enormous fields. I find inspiration in such different genres as jazz, impro, pop, singer/songwriter, rock, classical contemporary music, from composers of classical music-history in general, as well as from folk music living in different countries all over the world.

Important issues for me are: “What is true improvisation?” and “What is real composition about?” Furthermore: ”What may improvisation contribute to composition?” and “What may composition contribute to improvisation?” – These issues may seem simple, but actually they are very complex and extremely interesting.

I am passionately devoted to questions concerning aesthetics in music. Issues related to one specific genre are not necessarily the same in relation to another. Nevertheless, they will always be transferable to other musical areas, and distinctly mirror each other. One truth within certain aesthetic frames; will always be relevant within other contrasting frames, either as a clear reflection of the first, or as a clarifying contrast.

I consider practical musical performance an important source of personal development. In my opinion, working with music contributes to developing presence in “the now”, combined with awareness about oneself.

Music is potentially beyond questions concerning politics, climate-change and other important issues. It is essential enough to be independent of society, with certain basic exceptions; such as food, water, shelter and education.
